Work begins on a new production of Giuseppe Verdi's opera La Traviata at the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre. On December 14, the production stage director of the performance, Sergey Novikov, presented his vision of the most popular opera in the world's repertoire to the creative team. The premiere of the performance on the Grand Stage of the theatre is scheduled for June 4, 2026.
Today, Sergey Novikov is one of the most sought-after stage directors on the Russian opera stage. His work can be seen in the country's leading theatres, and recently he was named Stage Director of the Year at the Onegin National Opera Award. Sergey Novikov's productions are distinguished by their scale, academicism and thoughtful, respectful approach to the classics.
Mikhail Tatarnikov, the chief conductor of NOVAT, will act as the music director of the new performance, while the set designer Sergei Novikov is working on the scenery. La Traviata will be the third joint production of the namesake tandem. The Mariinsky Theatre is successfully hosting the operas Ariadne auf Naxos by Richard Strauss and Norma by Vincenzo Bellini, staged by the creative duo.
At a meeting with the Theatre Company, Sergey Novikov showed the opera soloists sketches of the sets, explaining what he would like to reveal in the characters’ images and how he envisioned the motives of behaviour and logic of the main characters.
