The premiere of the opera Le Rossignol at NOVAT will be held in the Year of Culture of Russia and China

February 23, 2025

On April 25 and 26, the premiere of Igor Stravinsky's opera Le Rossignol will take place on NOVAT's Small Stage.

The stage directors, NOVAT's chief stage director, Honoured Artist of Russia Vyacheslav Starodubtsev, and the theatre's music director, chief conductor Mikhail Tatarnikov, dedicated their new work to the Year of Culture of Russia and China, as well as to the 220th anniversary of the birth of Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen, whose fairy tale became a literary source for the opera's libretto.

Stage director Vyacheslav Starodubtsev: “It is very important for us to convey to the listener the idea of the great power of true art: It can heal, just as the singing of a living nightingale can banish death itself. The opera is small, but very rich and musically colourful, with an express oriental flavour. Stravinsky's music for Le Rossignol shows the composer's passion for oriental themes and Chinese culture, so, of course, we couldn't help but reflect this mysterious oriental charm in the aesthetics and symbolism of the performance. Moreover, we have an idea to add vivid elements of traditional Chinese culture to our performance, but we won't tell you which ones yet: the audience will be able to see them already at the premiere.”

The scenery and costumes for the performance Le Rossignol are created by designer Timur Gulyaev, lighting designer is Irina Vtornikova, video designer is Vadim Dulenko, stage movement is directed by Sergey Zakharin.

The new performance will add in the family repertoire of our theatre. We are waiting for young and adult audience at the premiere of Igor Stravinsky's opera Le Rossignol on April 25 and 26.
