Simon Virsaladze

(1908–1989)

Outstanding theatre designer, People’s Artist of the USSR, (full) member of the USSR Academy of Art, Lenin Prize-Winner (1970), USSR State Prize-Winner (1949, 1951, 1977). From 1932-36‑Chief Designer at the Georgian Z. Paliashvili Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Tbilisi, from 1945–62 – Chief Designer at the Leningrad Kirov Theatre of Opera and Ballet. Virsaladze designed opera, ballet and theatre productions.

From 1957 Virsaladze worked together with choreographer Yuri Grigorovich. He designed the sets and costumes for the following of the choreographer’s productions: The Stone Flower Prokofiev (1957, Kirov Theatre; Bolshoi Theatre 1959), Legend of Love A. Melikov (1961, Kirov Theatre; 1965, Bolshoi Theatre); at the Bolshoi Theatre – Sleeping Beauty Tchaikovsky (1963; new version-1973), The Nutcracker Tchaikovsky (1966), Spartacus A. Khachaturyan (1968), Swan Lake Tchaikovsky (1969), Ivan the Terrible to music by Prokofiev (1975), Angara A. Eshpay (1976), Romeo and Juliet Prokofiev (1979), The Golden Age Shostakovich (1982), Raymonda Glazunov (1984).
