Grand Prix
On 21-24 October 2009, St Petersburg saw the first competition between students of Russian ballet school – Grand Prix of the Mikhailovsky Theatre. The project became very popular with the public: they could see both future and present ballet stars. Students of the Vaganova State Ballet Academy, the Moscow State Ballet Academy and the Novosibirsk State Ballet College took part in the competition.
On 21 October 2009, the Mikhailovsky Theatre presented a triple bill, which included the final tour of the competition, The Cavalry Halt, a one-act ballet staged after Marius Petipa featuring the Mikhailovsky Ballet Company and the famous Class Concert choreographed by Asaf Messerer presented by the Bolshoi Ballet Company.
On 24 October 2009, the winners of the Grand Prix danced in the Gala Concert along with the principals of the Mariinsky, Bolshoi, Mikhailovsky Theatres, The Royal Ballet, the English National Ballet, and the Paris Opera.
The winners were awarded by Diana Vishneva, Prima ballerina of the Mariinsky Theatre, Irina Perren, Prima ballerina of the Mikhailovsky Theatre, Mike Dixon, Chairman of the Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards, Alyona Doletskaya, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue, Earl James Waldegrave, Thomas Noll, General Manager of the Grand Hotel Europe, Olga Litvinova, Managing Partner of DLA Piper, Igor Stupnikov, ballet critic.
The Mikhailovsky Theatre expresses its gratitude to The Grand Hotel Europe, the General Partner of the Grand Prix, DLA Piper, the Official Partner, Mr Toshihiko Takahashi for his constant support of the projects of the theatre and his contribution to the prize fund of the Mikhailovsky Grand Prix, and the Imperial Mikhailovsky Theatre Foundation.
