For its 78th birthday, NOVAT is preparing a grandiose gift for the audience: on May 12, 13 and 14, Valery Gavrilin’s ballet Anyuta will be premiered on the Grand Stage of the theatre; it will be directed and choreographed by the People’s Artist of the USSR, an outstanding dancer, choreographer Vladimir Vasiliev. Premiere performances will take place on the NOVAT Grand Stage with starring of the NOVAT ballet company dancers and guest soloists of the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia. The festive May repertoire of NOVAT includes iconic productions of the theatre of recent seasons. The grandiose premiere of the current season The Tsar's Bride opera by N. Rimsky-Korsakov in a large-scale, spectacular stage version by the Chief Stage Director of NOVAT, Honored Art Worker of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Starodubtsev will be held on May 17 at 7.00 pm. The most poetic and bright opera of the world repertoire, Iolanta by P. Tchaikovsky, staged by director Irkin Gabitov, will take viewers to the romantic era of chivalry on May 26.
La Bayadère by L. Minkus, edited by Nacho Duato will be held on May 18 and 19. It’s a respectful and subtle reading of the eternally youthful masterpiece of Russian classics by a contemporary master. A fabulous ballet extravaganza in Russian style for children and adults - The Little Humpbacked Horse by R. Shchedrin will be presented on May 20 and 21. A dance reading of the famous novel by Victor Hugo, Notre Dame de Paris ballet by Roland Petit with mould-breaking music by Maurice Jarre and spectacular costumes by Yves Saint Laurent, awaits the audience on May 24 and 25. The favorite fairy tale Cinderella by S. Prokofiev, edited by R. Zakharov in 1945 and carefully revived on our stage by Mikhail Messerer, will be shown on May 27 and 28. And the immortal ballet Swan Lake by P. Tchaikovsky will be the final performance of May on the NOVAT Grand Stage.
The May opera playbill of the Small Stage will be cheerful and sunny as spring. On May 5, Don Pasquale, a brilliant romantic opera by Gaetano Donizetti, will be performed. On May 11, I. Strauss's operetta The Bat will take the guests of our theatre to a carefree masquerade ball, into an atmosphere of innocent deceit and love affairs. Cheerful pre-wedding turmoil, a storm of emotions and the magical Mozart’s music await the audience at the performance Le Nozze di Figaro on May 19. Shakespeare's comedy The Taming of the Shrew in the reading of the Soviet composer Vissarion Shebalin will be presented on May 27. On May 6, our guests will be able to visit one of the brightest concert projects by the Artistic Director of NOVAT Dmitri Jurowski Around the world journey to the tango realm. We invite you to the program, each time surprising and delighting the audience in a new way.
On May 9, the traditional concert Celebrating the Victory Day will take place on the Small stage with the participation of soloists of the opera, choir and orchestra. The program will feature the most beloved songs written during the war years, music memoirs that are familiar to everyone in Russia.
Events within the framework of the Year of Rachmaninoff at NOVAT will continue on May 25 with the concert Rachmaninoff and Mentors, the program of which was prepared by Dmitri Jurowski. The music by Sergei Rachmaninoff in the program will alternate with the works of other outstanding Russian authors who influenced the composer's talent development.
On May holidays and weekends, we invite the whole family to visit the wonderful performances of the opera cycle, addressed to young theatregoers. You will see Karlsson on the Roof by Anton Gladkikh (May 6), César Cui's operas The Booted Cat (May 21) and Little Red Riding Hood (May 28). On May 13, Pushkin's fairy tale will come to life on the stage of NOVAT in the wonderful opera The Tale of the Dead Princess and the Seven Knights by V. Pleshak from the cycle Pushkiniana. The May premiere of the fascinating, full of humor and enthusiasm opera The Extraordinary Adventures of Buratino by A. Semenov will take place on May 20.
