Sergei Rachmaninoff anniversary

1st April the world musical community celebrated 145 years since Sergei Rachmaninoff’s birth. Great composer, genius pianist, conductor – he was the most important person in Russian music world of the early XX century. Successor of XIX century music tradition, he left a vast artistic heritage and brought a heavy influence to the entire music culture of the world.

NOVAT dedicates April premieres to the anniversary of Sergei Rachmaninoff.

Series of anniversary performances on Rachmaninoff will start 10th April with one-act opera premiere “Francesca da Rimini” at Isidor Zak concert hall. Stage Director is Vyacheslav Starodubtsev, Musical Director is Ara Karapetyan. Vyacheslav Starodubtsev believes that Rachmaninoff’s “Francesca da Rimini” is “a piece of heavy emotional impact, with limitless musical depth”. The directors suggest a visual solution designed in terms of Gustav Doré’s prints for Dante Alighieri’s “Divine Comedy”.

Another Rachmaninoff premiere will take place 17th April at Isidor Zak concert hall. Laureate of the international “Nano-opera” competition of opera directors Alexey Smirnov will present his first work at NOVAT, it will be Rachmaninoff’s “Miserly Knight”. Musical Director of the production is Ara Karapetyan. Stage Director admits: “It a great pleasure to work on Rachmaninoff’s opera. The composer is a true master of managing the music matter, the vocal parts, there are no unimportant details in opera, each pattern is essential”.

Rachmaninoff admired poetry and it was a source of inspiration for many of his pieces. He used to say: “Poetry is my second favorite thing after music”. So it’s wonder why the composer’s artistic heritage include so many romances based on works by Russian poets. The concert “Russian romance masterpieces” on 21st April also dedicated to the anniversary, will include Sergei Rachmaninoff’s romances sung by the soloists of the Novosibirsk opera.
