Premieres of the Autumn: Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky

August 22, 2016

In the beginning of the new season NOVAT will present ballet and opera premieres to the audience.

The premiere of Romeo and Juliet ballet will be dedicated to the 125th anniversary of Sergey Prokofiev's birth. Romeo and Juliet will open the upcoming Theatre season: premiere performances will be presented on September 13, 14, 15, 16. Almost half a century later the famous ballet will once again appear on the stage of NOVAT in staging by Oleg Vinogradov. Soothing inner light sent forth by the young Veronese lovers is threaded by dark, sinister ambience, where rituals and canons are hostile to a soul’s living motion. Stage designer - Semyon Pastukh, costume designer - Galina Solovyova, lighting designer - Alexander Kibitkin, musical director and conductor - Dmitry Jurowski.

Masterpieces by Pyotr Tchaikovski will continue the series of Autumn premieres in NOVAT.

On October 14 and 15 NOVAT is presenting the first opera premiere - The Queen of Spades. The Game. Three cards are in Destiny’s hands, the high stakes game is on. What would a wrong move turn into? The Queen of Spades is one of those uncommon pieces of literature that possess magic power and captivate a reader with irresolvable mysteries. The plot of Pushkin’s short novel was revealed in a new perspective by virtue of Tchaikovsky’s expressive music full of dramatism and vibrant lyricism. Premiere of the opera in director’s version by Vyacheslav Starodubcev is dedicated to the memory of Vsevolod Meyerhold, whose ideas served as an inspiration for NOVAT’s creators.

On October 21 and 22 The Sleeping Beauty ballet in staging by Nacho Duato will be introduced to the audience. This is a unique take on our contemporary's classics, a truly distinguished master. Using a language of dance, Duato managed to create a charming atmosphere of magic. "I intended to speak to people through their hearts, - the choreographer says. - You know, there is a kind of fairy tales for children: you open a carton page - there is a forest, another one - there is a castle... It's a tale, a fairy tale for children! It is especially important in our days, while there are so many bad things happening in the world". Musicality, taste and lambent humour of the stage director will be appreciated by audiences of all ages. Ballet production created in St. Petersburg in 2011 is included in repertoires of Mikhailovsky theatre and Berlin State Opera.

Ticket sales for the premiere performances of September, October and November are already opened.
