Rossinis Rosina

October 28, 2016

Il Barbiere di Seviglia is a set of bright images, familiar melodies, amusing plot twists and fine mockery at human weaknesses. In the last season the popular opera by Gioachino Rossini took its rightful place on the playbill of NOVAT. On November 3 Il Barbiere di Seviglia will be performed on our stage again.

The plot is borrowed from the famous play by Beaumarchais: the Count falls in love with charming Rosina, but her old foster father interferes in the couples happiness. The lightness of the plot doesnt mean the simplicity of musical material. The part of Rosina is considered to be one of the most difficult ones in the world opera repertoire. On our stage this part is performed by Svetlana Tokareva a mezzo soprano, which can be charged as something unusual by many people.

- As a matter of fact, the part of Rosina was composed for mezzo-soprano, - tells the musical director and conductor of the production Pyotr Belyakin. But in the period of the opera outspread there were no such voices in Russia. As a consequence, a tradition of entrusting this part to coloratura sopranos emerged. In this sense the Novosibirsk opera and ballet theatre is lucky to have Svetlana Tokareva in the Company. She can handle not only such roles as Lyubasha or Carmen, but also flexible mezzo-soprano parts. As a result, Il Barbiere di Seviglia will be performed in those keys that were originally bethought by the composer.
