Guest conductors

Alberto Veronesi

Alberto Veronesi has made a name for himself as a modern-day maestro, combining his vast knowledge of repertoire, brilliant rapport with his fellow performers and an entrepreneurial savvy to great effect in his posts, performances and recordings. His success on the podium and behind the scenes developing projects has won him admiring audiences around the world.

Born in Milan, Veronesi studied at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi and, while still a student there, demonstrated his enterprising spirit by expanding on his conducting engagements with contemporary music concerts and founding the Guido Cantelli Orchestra, which has remained in residence at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi. He conducted the orchestra until 2000, including performances on tour at the Salzburg Easter Festival (at the invitation of Claudio Abbado), the Teatro alla Scala and the Maggio Musicale. In 1999, Veronesi was appointed Music Director of the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago, where he has not only since conducted all of the composers operas but also contributed to the construction of a new opera house. In 2003, his production of La Bohème at the Festival won the Premio Abbiati, awarded by the Italian Music Critics Association. His performances at the Festival in 2009 included a new production of Manon Lescaut and a gala concert with soprano Angela Gheorghiu. In 2001, Veronesi was named Artistic and Music Director of the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana in Palermo, where he performs complete cycles of symphonies by Beethoven, Bruckner, Mahler and Shostakovich, as well as giving prominence to 20th century Italian symphony music and continuing to programme contemporary works. Recently, he was also named Artistic Director of the Filarmonica del Teatro Comunale di Bologna. In 2010, Veronesi was named Music Director of the Opera Orchestra of New York for the 2011-12 season.

By continually looking for ways to bring underexposed repertoire to a wider audience, Veronesi has embarked on a string of recording projects with Deutsche Grammophon, beginning in 2006 with a recording of Puccinis Edgar on which he collaborated with Plcido Domingo and the Orchestra and Chorus of Santa Cecilia. In 2009, Deutsche Grammophon released his album of rarely performed Puccini arias and duets, sung by Domingo and Violeta Urmana with the Wiener Philharmoniker, as well as a recording of Mascagnis Lamico Fritz with Angela Gheorghiu, Roberto Alagna and the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. Next season will see the release of three new recordings Giordanos Fedora with Gheorghiu and Domingo, Leoncavallos I Medici with Domingo and Leoncavallos I pagliacci with Gheorghiu and Alagna.

Veronesi has also recorded Leoncavallos La Nuit de mai with Domingo on an album that includes several arias performed with Domingo and pianist Lang Lang. In demand as a guest conductor in addition to his own projects, Veronesi has conducted in New York, Berlin, Brussels, Tokyo, Athens and Tel Aviv, including operas at the Maggio Musicale, the Deutsche Oper and La Monnaie.
