It's one of Joseph Haydn's first compositions for musical theatre. The plot comes from Benedetto Marcello's satirical pamphlet "The Fashionable Theatre" ('II Teatro alla Moda'). The original version of the libretto was written by the Venetian playwright Carlo Goldoni. The play has many plot twists associated with the tradition of commedia dell'arte.
Characters: Don Pelagio, the chapelmaster; Gasparina, the singer; Apollonia, the pretended mother of Gasparina; Don Ettore, the young son of a merchant.
