George Balanchine, Michelangelo of Russian ballet, as called by the critics, created his own personal unique style acknowledged around the world. Balanchine was born and raised in imperial St.-Petersburg, then left the country at the age of 19, although he carried his loyalty for classic ballet traditions through his entire life, combining it with the most daring contemporary changes However, his ballet “Theme and Variations” became very likely the most academic ballets of all he had ever created. Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Orchestral Suite No.3 music consists of twelve variations, and each one of them is an amazing dance study for the principal couple surrounded by an exquisite entourage of ballerinas with a fascinating pas-de-deux in the middle and the triumphant Grand polonaise for the finale. A ballet with “aristocratic origin” will adorn the one-act ballet night at NOVAT.
